Fans trade them, in the form of texts, radio broadcasts, recorded talks, and television programs, both online and off. The British-born interpreter and popularizer of East Asian Buddhist thought generated most of his media in the San Francisco of the 1950s and 1960s, and his televised lectures, produced for local public station KQED, must have offered many a San Franciscan their very first glimpse of Zen. Now that episodes of his series Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life have made it to YouTube (season one, season two), you can see for yourself that Watts’ then-cutting-edge delivery of this ancient wisdom remains entertaining, informative, and striking in its clarity. Begin with the introductory episode above, “Man and Nature,” in which Watts calmly lays out his observations of the ill effects of Westerners’ having grown to distrust their human instincts.

We waste our energy fighting nature, rather than working with it; we compulsively chatter to ourselves when we should let new things into our minds; we pursue pleasure, forgetting that we can’t recognize it in the absence of pain; we divide reality into miniscule chunks to make science and engineering possible, but then get unfortunately locked into that mode of thinking. These are some of the many disadvantageous habits Watts points out over the course of these lectures. But he also tells stories, cracks dry jokes, and takes advantage of the visual medium with illustrations from Eastern art, aesthetics, and even language. Whenever I feel I’ve lapsed into the vacillating, ineffectual psychological state he called “the quaking mess” — and it happens often — I call up a shot of Watts with broadcasts like these, and I’m back living in reality in no time.

All available episodes of Eastern Wisdom and Modern Thought: Man and Nature, Things and Thinks, Time, The Void, The Silent Mind, Death, Recollection, Pain, On Being Vague, Law and Order, Omnipotence, The Discipline of Zen, Mahayana Buddhism, Buddhism and Science, Buddhism and Christianity, The Life of Zen
{"$t":"zen
$t":"http://www.blogger.com/profile/08360255440447556508
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"thr$total":{"$t":"0
$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6870291881467616887.post-7507466538067759026
$t":"2011-12-23T17:47:00.000-08:00
$t":"2012-12-23T19:01:01.140-08:00
"$t":"Alan Watts - The Art Of Meditation
html","$t":"

Allan Watts's the art of meditation free your mind!

For many of us, our thoughts are used to create meaning. For whatever happens in our day, we have preconceived notions based on how we would like them to be. For example, if we see a friend with a new girlfriend that you're attracted to, immediately the seeds of jealousy are sown as you attach meaning to it. Why does he get a hot girl like that and I don't? Such thought, the attachment of meaning to it, and trying to fight the thoughts and make them go away, is the root cause of suffering, depression, clouding one's thinking, and destroying happiness.
What if we simply stopped thinking, or analyzing. The great psychiatrist Alan Watts once said that "he who thinks all the time has nothing to think about but thoughts, and lives in a world of illusion." When we stop thinking, and attaching meaning to things and just let things be, without judging, without attaching meaning, and just think that something just is amazing clears are mind and we are able to see reality in its purest form.

If we were to allow are thoughts to be, and realize that they are not reality, and they are not something that we can wish away, or touch and control, and allow them to be and flow like a river, all suffering and anxiety would end. We would still think, but instinctively, as nature intended. Our mental processes would see our friend with the hot girl and just process it as our friend with a hot girl. The driver who cuts us off while we're on the highway is, what it is, not what we expect it to be. Our minds and instincts are still there to cause us to react appropriately to steer to avoid the accident, or deal with any situation that comes are way, so the rest is chatter, or artificially created meaning.

If you can ever remember being in a situation when you felt overjoyed, try and relive it. You were probably not thinking at all, nothing in the world mattered but the moment. Or perhaps if you were an athlete, and you were on fire and everything you did was down flawlessly and you could do no wrong - it's known as "the zone" by some people. You may have remembered that as soon as you thought about it, the zone went away.

So, if we create are own thoughts, why do we make ourselves suffer by attaching meaning to events and places when there is no such thing as meaning in the physical world. Perhaps it's our heightened sense of self importance, thinking that we have to be something special, that there must be some kind of meaning, something larger than ourselves. However, this all pride and vanity getting in the way of the highest purpose of all, being in tune with nature and living in the now. After all, the past and future do not exist. Never will you or anyone do anything in the future or past unless you own a time machine. Life is one endless moment, and the purpose is to be in it. Lots of problems and a lot of wars have been created by powerful people attaching a great deal of meaning to events and circumstances when in the grand scheme of the Universe it is of no significance.

Also, in terms of achievement, I used to think that I had to think really hard to achieve things. This only clouded my mind, kept me out of the moment, and ruined my future because I could not achieve my potential unless I was 100% in the moment, which is the only time when you can do anything at all. So in reality, thinking not only leads to suffering, but it leads to failure as well. Stop thinking, let your instincts be your guide, and you will be capable of amazing things. It may take a lot conditioning, including meditation, be you can reprogram your mind away from the initial programming of worrying about the past, the future, what others think and the meaning of life. Your brain is a product of billions of years of evolution, allow the computer to do it' work and don't get in the way by attaching meaning to your thoughts. Let them flow like a river, and happiness and abundance will follow.

Source:
The Art of Meditation by Alan Watts
{"$t":"zen
$t":"http://www.blogger.com/profile/08360255440447556508
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"media$thumbnail":{"xmlns$media":"http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/
"thr$total":{"$t":"0
$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6870291881467616887.post-2855369620277125503
$t":"2011-11-23T18:07:00.000-08:00
$t":"2012-12-23T18:08:38.930-08:00
"$t":"Alan Watts - The Silent Mind (Philosophical discourses series)
html","$t":"

<img border="0" height="0" src="http://i2.ytimg.com/vi/bJVChTnVHtA/0.jpg" width="0" />

Alan Watts - The Silent Mind (Awareness Meditation)
In this early 1960 recording of his TV episode by the same name, Alan Watts gradually walks the talk of a silent mind through meditation. Using calligraphy and the abstraction models, Watts argues why meditation is considered essential for sanity by the traditions, highlighting why no-thought is required for [better] thoughts. Man's conditioning, especially in the West, of putting strain on the human senses impedes the clarity of them, he argues, since it is unnatural. Further, the constant thinking about the experiences in terms of coding them into words, this abstraction of thought, increasingly divorces us from the reality. Watts proposes that this is the reason why this attitude of having a quiet observation, without thoughts, at least some of the time during the day, has been developed in the East.

He clarifies that this is not to say that thinking is a disturbance, that it is something that the human being shouldn't do; on the contrary, it is a highly important acquisition of man. But thinking isn't of any real value to us, he argues, unless we can also practice non-thinking; unless we can have our minds silent and make immediate contact with the real world as distinct from the world of pure abstraction of thoughts. The logic Watts proposes is the saying, "talking to oneself all the time is a sign of madness", while arguing that one's thoughts are in effect a self-talk. He then postulates that this non-thinking is what is called meditation.

A side-note: Other scholars, especially of the 19th century such as T. W. Rhys Davids, seem to share the exact same view but who might be using a different, sometimes even opposite, terminology. For instance, while noting the categories, as found in Dittha Dhammika Nibbāna Vāda (Nirvana through the dharma of Drashti, i.e. seeing/ Awareness), of attaining the perfect bliss in the present world, Rhys Davids records the properties of the First Dhyāna as, "By an enquiring mental abstraction." Apparently, this is the author's scholarly interpretation, which seems to stem from the western empirical view that essentially "thoughts are reality," and hence to get rid of thoughts is to attain a level of abstraction. Alan Watts, on the other hand, is providing an as-is narration in this video as found in these philosophies where, "thought is an abstraction".

While it is not explicitly mentioned, the technique described by Watts here, including the analogy of vibrations, closely resembles the Awareness Meditation practice where, the ascent of the practice is simply to observe objectively, and not necessarily to cut out from the sense organs, but to let their experiences come forth without any obstructions, until the experiencer and the experience are united. As the knower and the known become one, it produces the experience of one's unity with the universe - which, as Alan Watts underscores, is the function of meditation.

The concluding quote of Lafcadio Hearn from the video above, describing the attitude potraid by the expressions on the face of a meditating buddha:

"Each idol shaped by human faith
remains the shell of truth eternally divine,
and even the shell itself may hold a ghostly power.
The soft serenity,
the passionless tenderness
of those Buddha faces
might yet give peace of soul
to a West weary of creeds,
transformed into conventions,
eager for the coming of another teacher to proclaim,
'I have the same feeling for the High as the Low,
for the moral as the immoral,
for the depraved as for the virtuous,
for those holding sectarian views and false opinions
as for those whose beliefs are good and true."

{"$t":"zen
$t":"http://www.blogger.com/profile/08360255440447556508
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"media$thumbnail":{"xmlns$media":"http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/
"thr$total":{"$t":"0
$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6870291881467616887.post-3338411762362937260
$t":"2011-07-23T17:42:00.000-07:00
$t":"2012-12-23T17:43:19.509-08:00
"$t":"Alan Watts - Meditation
html","$t":"
Alan Watts lecturing on meditation.

{"$t":"zen
$t":"http://www.blogger.com/profile/08360255440447556508
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"media$thumbnail":{"xmlns$media":"http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/
"thr$total":{"$t":"0"}}]}});
